What is Calcium folinate?
Calcium folinate (called Folinic acid or calcium leucovorin also) is the calcium salt of 5-formyl
tetrahydrofolic acid. It is an active metabolite of folinic acid and an
essential coenzyme for nucleic acid synthesis in cytotoxic therapy. Calcium
folinate is frequently used to diminish the toxicity and counteract the action
of folate antagonists, such as methotrexate.
Folinic acid is a medication used in the treatment of various cancers in combination with 5-FU. It is also commonly used as an antidote to folic acid antagonists such as methotrexate. Folinic acid (leucovorin) is an antidote, chemotherapy modulating agent, and rescue agent for the chemotherapy class of medications.5-FU administration reduces deoxythymidine monophosphate, blocks DNA synthesis, and causes cell death. Calcium folinate stabilizes the complex between 5-FU and thymidylate synthase and thus augments 5-FU cytotoxicity.
