The safety of melatonin has always been the focus of debate. The most credible potential side effects of melatonin include:

1. Nervous system effects: including dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting; increased risk of depression, increased risk of seizures in patients with epilepsy; mild anxiety, irritability, depression and other emotions.
2. Endocrine system effects: A large amount of exogenous melatonin will disrupt the normal secretion of glands (especially those with normal melatonin levels), and indirectly affect the secretion of other hormones.
3. Reproductive system effects: Large doses of melatonin may inhibit ovulation, thereby affecting female reproductive capacity. For men, taking too much melatonin may reduce libido.
4. Digestive system effects: Some patients experience abdominal discomfort, diarrhea and constipation.
However, the above side effects mostly occur after long-term (>3 months) and high-dose melatonin (>10mg/d); Overdose.

In most studies, melatonin did not show concern for side effects. Clinical studies have proven that its safety is guaranteed. A 2016 article by ClinicalDrugInvestigation titled "The SafetyofMelatonininHumans" was devoted to this issue, and the authors' basic points were as follows:
1. Melatonin is safe for short-term use, even in high doses (extremedoses).
2. The reported side effects are mild, mainly dizziness, headache, nausea and drowsiness.
3. The safety of long-term use of melatonin in children and adolescents remains to be studied.
4. Pregnant and lactating women should not use melatonin.

At the same time, don't expect all sleep problems to be solved by taking melatonin. Melatonin is only a health care product to assist sleep treatment, and cannot replace regular insomnia treatment drugs by itself. Severe insomnia is a disease, you need to see a specialist! Don't blindly eat health supplements!
