Usage |
Aniracetam is a γ-lactam-based drug designed to improve brain function.
Aniracetam primarily acts on the nervous system, capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and selectively targeting the brain. It enhances the metabolism of neurotransmitters, promotes the metabolism of 5-hydroxytryptamine, and effectively shortens selective reaction times. By doing so, it promotes and enhances memory function, improves intelligence, and has neuroprotective effects. Aniracetam also modulates the function of synaptic AMPA receptors and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), contributing to its neuroprotective and nootropic properties.
Aniracetam is clinically used to treat mild to moderate vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, which are associated with learning, memory, and cognitive dysfunction. It is also used to improve memory function after stroke, benign memory disorders in middle-aged and elderly individuals, and developmental delays in children. Animal studies have shown that Aniracetam improves memory reproduction in normal rats and counteracts memory impairment caused by hypoxia.
